Market Overview
LEDs Keep Prospects Upbeat for the North American Lighting Components Aftermarket
The North American lighting components aftermarket has experienced restrained revenue growth due to the weakening of the economy and the decline in the number of vehicle collisions. Aftermarket suppliers that manufacture and distribute reverse-engineered components from offshore factories will grow at the expense of original equipment (OE) suppliers, who control a majority of the market share. OE suppliers will recover some gains during the medium to long term through the sale of higher priced headlights and taillights, using light emitting diode (LED) and high intensity discharge (HID) technologies. "Increased sales of designer headlamps and taillights, as well as premium bulb upgrades, will drive average component prices up by 0.9 percent annually over the 2008-2015 period," notes the analyst of this research service. "However, this will be greatly offset by the falling price of light emitting diodes (LEDs), and increased penetration of aftermarket parts."
The use of LEDs as original equipment will allow aftermarket manufacturers to develop innovative products that stimulate vehicle modification activity and the purchase of component upgrades. They are lighter and thinner than incandescent lamps, allowing for increased styling as well as personalization, and they can be positioned in creative ways that produce unique light patterns, colors, and shapes. LEDs will also gain ground in the accessories segment as distributors reduce the number of neon components in their programs.
Stepping up Non-collision Sales Activity will take the Market Forward
Manufacturers and distributors are overly dependant on vehicle collisions to drive demand for lighting components. Advancements in vehicle safety systems have drastically reduced the number of automobile accidents over the past decade, narrowing the demand for high-dollar components such as headlight and taillight assemblies. Figures indicate that nearly 75 percent of headlight and taillight sales in 2008 were fueled by collision replacement. However, the number of auto accidents has declined by 11 percent during the past ten years. For this reason, revenues are not projected to grow over the forecast period. Considering this scenario, manufacturers must stimulate non-collision sales activity to achieve growth. For instance, many products - including driving lamps, rear altezza lights, and neon accessories - already exist to encourage vehicle owners to upgrade their lighting systems for reasons of enhanced appearance and function. However, poor marketing, distribution, and support structures have failed to ignite growth in these component segments. "Automotive lighting components, particularly headlights and taillights, are like jewelry," observes the analyst. "They are decorative, as well as functional, and more technologically advanced, making the parts more expensive to replace, thus supporting overall revenues."
Revenues will begin to rebound in a few years as the economy recovers, consumer spending rises, and collision rates increase. Opportunities will unfold for manufacturers that can develop and market attractive auxiliary lighting components for cars and smaller vehicles. Aftermarket suppliers will continue to take market share away from OE companies because their manufacturing quality has improved and they sell lower-priced parts through leading wholesale and retail distributors.
