  • In 2009, Toyota produced 7.23 million units of motor vehicles, down 21.69% over a year ago. Notably, all the top 10 automakers in the world recorded a decline in production during 2009 except Hyundai.
  • In 2009, total industry sales in Malaysia fell by 2.05% yoy to 536,905 units compared to 548,115 units in 2008. In July 2009, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) projected total industry sales of 500,000 units in 2009, which was higher than its initial projection of 480,000 units. In the passenger vehicles category, passenger car sales formed the biggest segment with a market share of 75.69% (Chart 8), followed by MPV (20.91%), 4X4/ SUV (2.37%) and window van (1.04%).
  • On October 28, 2010, UMW Toyota Motor announced the new on-the-road price for the Toyota Prius. The new price of the Toyota Prius is RM139,900, down RM35,000 from the previous price of RM174,900. Meanwhile, Toyota Prius will cost RM141,500 in Sabah and Sarawak due to higher logistic costs.
  • With the announcement of the revised NAP, the pressures in competition on a global scale forced consolidation in the industry to have better economies of scale in order to survive. The liberalization of the industry could result in more manufacturing plants being setup by foreign automakers, increased foreign direct investments and the transfer of technology to local manufacturers

Sales of commercial vehicles declined 0.18% year-on-year to 50,562 units in 2009.
