Summary

As the automotive markets of the Asia Pacific region grow in strength, the commercial vehicle segment has proven to be a driver of this growth in a number of countries. In Thailand, for example, the one-tonne pick-up truck segment has used its status as the world's second largest market for the vehicles behind the US to create a regional production and export hub. The Philippines has also relied on the segment to generate growth when the passenger car market was waning and as a result, the country enjoyed record vehicle sales in 2007.

In turn, the growth of the commercial vehicle segment has generated investment from major manufacturers, which should feed the growth cycle. Japan's Nissan has been encouraged to re establish its commercial vehicle business in the region based on its recent performance.

In November 2007 the firm revealed that it will focus on its light commercial vehicle (LCV) business in emerging Asian markets, with a focus on growth markets such as India and the Philippines. According to Nissan's corporate vice president Andy Palmer, the company has been working to rebuild its global business since 2002, when it was 'almost out of the LCV business'. Palmer added that the parent company is working with its LCV unit in the Philippines, Universal Motor Corp (UMC), and with its partners in Thailand to set up a dedicated LCV business structure for the ASEAN region.
