Summary
BMI has raised its forecast for passenger car sales in Poland this year after sales rose strongly in 2007,
exceeding our expectations. According to data from Poland's automotive research institute SAMAR, sales totalled 293,319 units in 2007, up by 22.9% on the previous year. As BMI reflects in the latest Poland Autos Report, new car sales in the country have been driven by a strong economic backdrop, which has led to greater household wealth.By carmakers, all of the top 10 players enjoyed an increase in sales. Toyota maintained its lead on the
market last year. The Japanese carmaker sold 33,848 units, up by 21.4% year-on-year (y-o-y). Skoda took second place with sales of 32,965 units, an increase of 14.5% against sales reported in 2006. Fiat completed the top three with sales of 27,817 units, up by 14.6%. Record sales were reported by Dodge(+128.3% to 605 units), Kia (+111.1% to 8,664 units) and Hyundai (+97.4% to 4,916 units).
The positive sales run has continued into 2008, with new car registrations in January rising by 25% y-o-y,
Industry developments this quarter include Ford's decision to invest EUR94mn to produce its redesigned
Ka model in Poland. According to industry sources, the model, which shares the same platform as Fiat's
Moreover, automotive output in Poland has received a boost with the news that Fiat is to step up
production of the new 500 model in order to meet strong demand for the vehicle. According to industry sources, daily production of the vehicle will rise from 500 to 750 units.Content
