Summary

Over the first eight months of 2008, world car demand is estimated to have risen by 2.2% as a sharp decline in Nafta and a milder fall in western Europe were more than offset by growth in most other regions.

However, slowing growth in many of the previously strong markets is now being seen and over the remainder of the year world demand is likely to fall back.

EU plus Efta

Over the first eight months of the year new car registrations in the 28 EU/ Efta markets dropped by 3.9% reflecting a 1.8% rise in the new EU member states and a 14.4% fall in western Europe, despite a 2.9% increase in France (boosted by low CO2 incentives) and a 1.7% rise in Germany where year-earlier demand was significantly weakened by VAT increases. There were falls of 12% in Italy, 21.1% in Spain and 3.8% in the UK.

Among the major European carmakers BMW was the best performer with a 5.1% rise (EU plus Efta) helped by its rising domestic market and a strong rise in Mini sales as the new Clubman entered the statistics for the first time. Daimler's new registrations were down by 1.2% as a 3.6% drop in Mercedes-Benz cars was partly offset by a 19.7% rise in Smart's sales.

The fall in Italian demand meant the Fiat group saw its new registrations fall by 2.8%, with Alfa Romeo sales falling 32% and Lancia's by 9.2%, though the Fiat brand managed a 2.3% increase.

Nissan excelled with a 20.6% increase, boosted particularly by the first-time impact of the Qashqai.

Toyota's sales fell by 13.5% as it performed weakly in Germany, despite the rising market.

Nafta

Full details were not available at the time of writing but retail sales of new cars and light trucks are reported to have plunged in September, led by a 34% slide at Ford, as escalating credit problems kept consumers away from showrooms.

Sales were down 24% at Honda, 32% at Toyota and 37% at Nissan. GM was more aggressive in discounting its vehicles and managed to keep its September sales decline to a relatively small 16%.

Japan

In Japan, new car sales remained depressed, dipping by just under 1% to 2.967 million units over the first eight months of 2008. Honda substantially outperformed the market with a 5.8% increase; Mazda managed a rise of 2.2%.
