Even though driver assistance systems (DAS) offer many advantages and social benefits, some vehicle manufacturers (VMs) are considering navigation-based DAS as the future of enhanced social mobility and a prelude to the much bandied Vehicle to Vehicle (V-I) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V-X) systems. The market for advanced DAS (ADAS) is estimated by Frost & Sullivan to reach 143 million Euros by 2015, primarily due to the increased demand for safety and the effort of premium car makers to differentiate their cars based on safety.
"Maps can give a look ahead capability for existing sensors, enhancing the environmental sensing capabilities of existing active safety systems," notes the analyst of this research. "Digital map-enabled ADAS can reduce traffic jams, and improve road safety by reducing road accidents." These factors can reduce the social costs related to road safety in Europe. A navigation system alone can perform the function of a safety system in cars. Preventive safety applications require advanced levels of accurate map data. However, current levels of map information are either inadequate or inaccurate.
