Summary
Key Issues
In the last quarter, the Chinese economy and banking system have continued to impress. Much of the growth is attributable to a particularly buoyant exports sector, which is expected to remain robust over the coming quarter, barring any significant shifts in the price of oil and global interest rates.
Commercial banks' balance sheets have been mixed, with strong growth in bonds (up 19%) and a rising Loan/GDP ratio contrasting with falling loan/deposit and loan/asset ratios over the past year.
Business Monitor International (BMI) predicts that China's very respectable growth rate, averaging 16%, will hold over the 2006-2010 forecast period. Whilst this rate is moderately less than that achieved in recent history, it is amongst the highest in the world.
Increasingly China is opening up its banking industry to the world with full foreign competition likely to be permitted by the end of the year. The move is partly the consequence of China's entrance into the WTO and partly a natural response to market maturity and the attendant requirement to generate capital.
China's banking system is now of such a size that developments in the sector have implications globally.
Changes To This Quarter's Commercial Banking Forecast
We have made a number of improvements to the commercial banking reports this quarter. In particular, we have collated information about banks' capital and bond portfolios.
We have looked at capital primarily because we wanted to produce a clearer picture of the banks' balance sheets and, in particular, the liabilities side. We are now much better able to quantify liabilities that are not deposits.
We collated information about the bond portfolios because we wanted to gain additional insights into the risks with which the banks are involved. Across all the countries that we have surveyed, the commercial banks are major investors in government securities. In some instances, the banks are large holders of bonds - by any standard. In other instances, the banks' holdings of securities represent a very substantial portion of their total assets.
