Summary

Payment Cards in New Zealand is an invaluable guide to one of the most important markets in Asia Pacific. The report provides statistics on market size, competitor market shares and acceptance. It also provides an overview of regulation, competitor activities, product innovation and market forecasts.

Scope

  • Data and analysis on debit cards, credit cards, and charge cards at both the card scheme and issuer level.
  • Analysis of the key competitor product developments and product launches in the market over the past 12 months.
  • Provides a clear overview of the regulatory structure in the market, as well as discussion of the key issues facing players in the space.
  • The credit, debit, and charge card markets are forecast to 2012 under three different macroeconomic scenarios.

Highlights

Debit cards are the dominant product in New Zealand, accounting for around two-thirds of all cards in issue and total payment card spend. Even more strikingly, frequency of use per card stands at an exceptional 216 transactions per card. In contrast, credit cards are used for 71 transactions per card.

ANZ National is the leading player in both the debit and credit card markets. However, while it leads the credit card market by some way in terms of cards in issue, the margin is much smaller in terms of balances outstanding. This indicates that ANZ National has a much lower average balance per card than its competitors.

The credit card market in New Zealand will be impacted by the current economic climate. In Datamonitor's neutral scenario, the number of credit cards in New Zealand is expected to see a modest rise in 2009, with low growth in 2010 to 2012, as the market becomes saturated and the penetration rate of credit cards approaches its limit.
