Summary
Consolidation in the Canadian life insurance market, triggered off by the demutualization of life insurers in 1999, has led to a near-oligopoly with the top-three players holding 90% market share in terms of assets in 2005. In effect, demutualization of the life insurance industry, which allows conversion of a mutual company owned by policy holders to a stock company owned by shareholders, has facilitated mergers and acquisitions. On the other hand, a decline in the household savings rate is adversely affecting the insurance industry players. Long-term reduction in interest rates and expectations of low inflation are driving consumers towards spending rather than saving. Meanwhile, the emergence of savings and investment instruments, such as annuities and retirement plans, as substitutes to life insurance products comprises another development. This has compelled life insurance players to alter their product portfolio.
This report offers a comprehensive analysis of the Canadian life insurance industry and its various segments. It deploys the Porter and PEST frameworks to elicit key industry insights. Apart from profiling leading players such as Manulife Financial Corp., Sun Life Financial Inc. (SLF) and Great-West Lifeco Inc., the analysis elaborates on the competitive positioning as well as the strategies adopted by these players. An analysis of the key financials then guages the comparative performance of the leading industry players. The analysis finally leads to an industry outlook with an emphasis on performance and prospects.
