Not-so-NICE remarks from Health Watchdog about Pharma Industry

Urmila DoraswamiPharma companies have been dragged into the firing line this week. The UK’s Observer quoted Professor Michael Rawlins, the chair of the health watchdog, NICE, as saying the drugs industry is overpricing critical new medicines to improve its profits.

Urmila DoraswamiThe UK Government’s Renewable Fuels Agency’s report said in early August, 2008 that of the biodiesel used in the UK from mid-April to mid-May, only a fifth of the total quantity of biofuels sold met recognised environmental standards.

The time has come for differentiation among biofuels. Some biofuels are clearly superior to others in terms of environmental benefits, and the standards that they adhere to. An unambiguous trend is emerging in the biofuels industry that recognises the fact that there is a premium on biofuels which meet sustainability criteria.

Starbucks Responds to Slowing Market

Starbucks has announced initiatives in two major markets aimed at reinvigorating its business.

Starbucks is to shed 75% of its stores in Australia, following difficulty penetrating the country’s coffee market, and provide free top-ups in the UK and Ireland in recognition of a consumer downturn.
