Consumer Demand Will Transform the Technology Landscape

Emma ConroyThe driving force behind adoption of new technologies will be consumer demand. That’s according to a new report 2007 Trends to Watch: Media and Broadcasting Technology. It forecasts greater convergence of telecoms, media and entertainment which will transform the technology landscape.

Consumers are increasingly adopting technologies and services that blur the boundaries between entertainment and communication. These developments affect players within the market and those supporting it.

The driving force for the adoption of technologies in the media and broadcasting sector is determined by the level of consumer demand and acceptance of new services. Not by how good the media technology looks. Consumers will only use new technologies if they see value or are positively affected in some way by a service. Organisations involved in the telecommunications, media and entertainment space need to be aware of this issue and not simply endorse new services due to the attractiveness of the technology.

The worlds of public service broadcasting and mobile telecommunications are becoming increasingly intertwined. Mobile broadcast television has been gaining increasing traction across the globe since 2005. As a result, broadcast to mobile could be an extremely lucrative market for both content providers and mobile telecommunications operators. However, significant barriers to entry need to be overcome.

2007 Trends to Watch: Media and Broadcasting Technology provides detailed analysis of the trends likely to effect this market over the next few years and includes a focussed look at different technologies.
