Do Soft Drinks Make you Fat?

Emma ConroyIt seems there’s a growing perception of an association between drinks with large quantities of sugar and obesity. While there is no direct medical link between sugar alone and overweight or obesity, there’s no doubt that untangling this notion is one of the greatest challenges for soft-drink manufacturers and retailers.

The free report Challenges for the Soft Drinks Manufacturer outlines some of the major concerns and activities surrounding soft drinks. It indicates that the UK government is so concerned it’s restricting children’s and young people’s exposure to advertisements for products that are high in sugar or fat and salt.

Soft drinks used to be a treat, something nice at the weekend or to accompany a meal. Soft drink companies have some of the most well recognised brands globally and own some of the most advertised products. It’s no wonder people aspire to drink their products. But when kids drink them more than water surely there’s a problem brewing.

With increased consumer awareness of the obesity issue, soft-drink retailers and manufacturers have been reporting a trend towards more healthy products with ‘cleaner’ ingredients. These are free from artificial flavours, colourings and preservatives.

To maintain their market value, soft-drink manufacturers will have to respond to market pressures and continue to create and deliver choice for consumers. In addition, products that offer consumers the opportunity to adopt a more healthy lifestyle look set to continue gaining popularity.
