Opposition Still Blowing at Wind Power

Jonna DaglidenYes they are ugly and no, they don’t really ‘fit in’. However, wind turbines are definitely here to stay. A study shows that the global wind energy industry is expected to produce 107,000 MW energy by 2017 as the industry is getting strong government support, huge investment and subsidies.

The wind energy companies worldwide believe that the boost to the wind energy sector might come from the US.

In addition, many other countries, including Spain, China and India, would also see rapid growth in their wind industry to meet the rising demand for energy due to high population growth. However, Germany would also give strong competition to the US, China, India and Spain in terms of installation of new wind energy capacity owing to rapidly declining subsidies, strong start and previous growth.

Further, countries are also adopting wind energy as a major source of energy production due to various reasons, such as more and cleaner energy at low cost. It is also eco-friendly because it reduces the dependence on nuclear fuels and coal for energy production.

However, some people don’t see the benefits of wind turbines. In August this year the BBC reported on ‘Save Our Silton‘ campaigners who are against plans which would see six 394ft (120m) turbines in Silton, a Dorset village. Although the company assured that they would generate electricity to power 35% of North Dorset homes, the protesters feared the noise and “living in the shadow” of the turbines proposed by the firm Ecotricity.
