The industry is expecting to experience stricter regulations with funeral and cremation services, especially in areas such as increased educational requirements for operators to hold or be issued with a license to operate in this industry. A study done in response to public concern arising from a few operators and practices associated with some high profile cases, found that while the majority of states do regulate each industry segment or activity, not all operators or practitioners may actually be subject to licensing or regulation.

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in preparing the dead for burial or interment and conducting funerals (i.e., providing facilities for wakes, arranging transportation for the dead, selling caskets and related merchandise).
