Summary

This IDC study examines the use of technology in mobile worker households. Products and technologies examined include desktop and notebook PCs, mobile phones, LANs, and different types of Internet access. Mobile workers and the technology they use are compared with the technology penetration of all U.S. households and home office households.

"Long before the changing economy put a premium on improving worker productivity, mobile workers were using technology in innovative and effective ways. There are 14.6 million mobile workers in U.S. households, and these on-the-move employees include traveling executives, consultants, sales reps, and workers at building sites," says Justin Jaffe, senior research analyst in IDC's SMB and Home Office Markets program. "As the number of mobile workers in U.S. corporations increases, so does the opportunity to provide a richer portfolio of technologies to keep them connected and productive while out of the office."
