Summary

This study is based on the results of IDC's European Vertical Markets survey, carried out in April/May 2005 in the top 5 Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) among 728 SMBs with more than 20 and fewer than 500 employees.

By following a clustering analysis, this study looks at SMBs' attitude towards information technology. Each of the four clusters identified represented companies in the survey that share similar attributes in the two indexes employed for the analysis. These four clusters were referred to as IT-oriented, fast followers, laggards, and wait-and-see adopters.
