Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (CZM) is a leading medical technology company that has been active in the optical sector for more than 160 years. The company operates under three business units - Ophthalmic Systems (diagnostic and treatment systems for ophthalmology), Surgical Ophthalmology (implants and consumables for ophthalmology) and Neuro and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery (surgical microscopes and microsurgical visualisation solutions). In addition to these products, CZM also produces visualisation systems for doctors in private practice and other technology such as intraoperative radiation therapy solutions, which allow the targeted treatment of breast cancer and brain cancer directly during surgery.

In recent years, the company's significant acquisitions have included: Ioltech, which added a range of intraocular lenses (IOLs) and consumables to CZM's product portfolio in 2005; Carl Zeiss Surgical, the world's leading provider of surgical microscopes and also added visualisation solutions for ophthalmic, neuro and ENT surgery to the CZM range in 2006; and the purchase of Acri.Tec in Germany in 2007, which expanded CZM's offering in the ophthalmic surgery segment.

CZM is based in Jena, Germany, with subsidiaries in Germany (Carl Zeiss Surgical GmbH, Carl Zeiss Meditec Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH, Acri.Tec GmbH and Carl Zeiss Medical Software GmbH), the US (Carl Zeiss Meditec, California), Japan (Carl Zeiss Meditec Co Ltd, Tokyo), Spain (Carl Zeiss Meditec Iberia SA, Madrid) and France (Carl Zeiss Meditec SAS, La Rochelle, and Carl Zeiss Meditec France SAS, Le Pecq).

Sixty-five per cent of CZM shares are held by Carl Zeiss, a manufacturer of optical and opto-electronics systems. The remaining 35% of the shares are in free float.
