Summary

Coloplast, headquartered in Humlebaek, Denmark, develops, manufactures and markets ostomy devices, urology products, continence care devices, wound care and skin care products. The company has changed significantly since 2006. The company purchased Mentor's urology unit in June 2006. With the Mentor transaction, Coloplast added to its previous continence care portfolio and gained new products that address general and surgical urology, providing it with the leading position in the urology and continence care market segments in which it participates. Through the acquisition, Coloplast also gained Mills Biopharmaceuticals, Mentor's brachytherapy division, which it sold to Core Oncology in June 2007.

To further enhance its urology portfolio, Coloplast acquired assets related to the Levera Male Incontinence Therapy from Caldera Medical in November 2007. Levera is a sling therapy designed to address symptoms of male stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Currently in the final stages of development, Levera offers a minimally-invasive alternative to traditional surgery. The sling exerts pressure on the urethra to improve continence. A similar approach is widely used for women with SUI, and this procedure has seen strong growth in recent years.

Coloplast also sold its Breast Care unit in April 2007. The division previously accounted for around 7% of Coloplast's revenue and was a leading manufacturer of external breast forms for women who have had a breast removed and of post-mastectomy lingerie and swimwear.

Coloplast generates the majority of its revenue in Europe, which accounted for 80% of the company's total revenue in fiscal 2007, while the Americas represented 14% of sales and the rest of the world 6%. Its products are sold in over 100 countries and sales are generated through subsidiaries and distributors in most parts of the world. The company's three largest sales subsidiaries are in the UK, Germany and France. In addition, it has 25 sales subsidiaries throughout Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world. In the US, Germany and the UK, Coloplast also owns distribution companies that deliver products and services directly to end-users.
