SUPERVALU acquired New Albertsons in June 2006. The acquisition increased the company's store portfolio to over 2,500 by adding round 1,125 stores to the company's existing retail store portfolio. The acquisition also made SUPERVALU, the third largest grocery store chain in the US.

SUPERVALU is a grocery retailer and a supply chain services provider in the US. The company operates through a network of 2,478 stores under various banners across the US. SUPERVALU is a primary supplier to around 2,200 grocery stores and a secondary grocery supplier to around 400 grocery stores.

Some of the products offered by the company are baked foods, health and beauty aids, dairy products,meats, deli, pharmaceutical products, and frozen foods. The company also offers a wider range of services such as merchandising and marketing, retail technology, online business tools, store brands and logistics.

One of the strategies of the company is to invest in increasing and updating, its store fleet. In fiscal 2007, the company invested a major part of its $1billion capital program in retail stores, including remodeling of 72 major stores, and addition of 34 new grocery stores and 73 new limited assortment grocery stores.
