This study looks at the worldwide market for RPTV televisions. It includes a market forecast for 2004?2009 split by region, technology, and screen size. Having contributed to a post-CRT-centric RPTV world, currently available microdisplay rear projection technologies such as DLP, LCD, and LCoS are all now under intense, downward pricing pressures from large flat panel TVs such as plasma and, soon, direct view LCD. Given rapid flat panel production advances, RPTV vendors will soon lose their one primary edge over their slim competitors: sheer size. RPTV was first to show off 1080p resolution TVs to the mainstream and now competes on two fronts: cheap and big, and big and high resolution.
