Summary
Micro Electromechanical System, MEMS for short, is a semiconductor technology integrating mechanism and electronics. The technology was initially applied to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) a lot then was utilized as MEMS sensors in many fields of automobiles. With the further advancement of MEMS technology and the development of application terminals towards lightness, thinness, shortness and smallness, demand for small-sized and high-performance MEMS products are accordingly increasing. MEMS product is also applied in consumer electronics and medicine, etc.
MEMS sensors are smaller, cheaper and more convenient to integrate compared with traditional sensors, so the latter are gradually replaced by the former in some applications in the key electronic part of automobiles. The maturing technology enables people to manufacture various micro sensors for mechanics, magnetics and calorifics measurement. These small-sized, low-power and multi-function sensors are convenient to mass-produce with high accuracy. Besides, it is easy to form large-sized and multi-function array for its low cost.
From 2000 to 2005, the growth of automotive MEMS sensor mainly included: accelerator for vehicle kinetics control and air bags; pressure sensors used in transmission, brakes, coolers, tyres and fuel oil, etc; yaw rate sensors applied to vehicle dynamic control, vehicle roll over warning and GPS spare equipments; location sensors used in tyre-rate control, camshafts, crankshafts and pedals; humidity sensor for controlling inner environment of cars; sunshine, rainwater and humidity sensors as well as distance sensors to examine nearby barriers and to avoid crash.
As MEMS sensors are increasingly sensible and cheap, MEMS products start to share a part of the consumer electronics market. The introduction of MEMS technology makes portable products even smaller with more functions available. For instance, MEMS microphone may effectively solve the problems that traditional microphone arrays encounters and thereby improve the input voice quality to support VOIP and voice distinguishing function. Also, MEMS technology better realizes applications of shockproof equipment, new access connector, highly sensible RF module, new optics and image shooting function, positioning system, identification check and battery endurance, etc.
MEMS products are mostly customized, so mass-production was a key problem for the MEMS industry at one time. Now many companies have realized MEMS mass-production. Akustica mass-produces MEMS digital microphones by adopting CMOS technology. MEMSIC component is a complete dual-axes acceleration measuring system that is also based upon single-chip CMOS IC manufacturing technique. Mass-production brings scale economic effect and constantly lowered prices. Many MEMS products have been or almost affordable for consumers, then there will be more manufactures consuming MEMS products.
China's MEMS industry is still in the introduction period. First MEMS Co., Ltd. and MEMSIC (China) are the two absolute leading companies in China's MEMS industry and they both have certain popularity in the international market. Many Chinese universities, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Jilin University, Xi'an Traffic University and Sensor Technology Institute of Electronic Technology Group, are actively conducting MEMS research work and pushing forward the MEMS industry of China. The Chinese government and its affiliated departments also strongly support the development of China's MEMS industry. It is believed that China's MEMS industry will see great-leap-forward development in the few years to come.
