Summary

This study shows that online gaming in the Asia/Pacific region is a dynamic and potentially rich market that can be expected to continue growing significantly. Through this study, IDC identified the preferences of online gamers across six countries in Asia/Pacific, namely Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, and Taiwan. Moreover, this study also provides an analysis of the demographic data on online gamers in the region.

Jun-Fwu Chin, senior analyst, Software Research, IDC Malaysia says, "Online gaming in Asia/Pacific will continue to experience growth in the near term, with increased PC and broadband penetration rates as main drivers. Moreover, though user preferences in terms of game genre and gaming platform may vary, similarities and synergies exist among gamers across the region, including a shared interest in playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) using PCs, a perception of escaping from reality through playing of online games, and the industry's being more male-oriented in terms of demographics."

IDC also believes that the continuing decline of PC hardware and broadband subscription rates, along with the impending releases of the Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3, will serve as additional growth catalysts. As these factors are added one by one to the gaming ecosystem, publishers and online gaming providers alike should, therefore, be made aware of the preferential needs and habits of Asia/Pacific gamers. As online gaming players' preferences vary from country to country and from platform to platform, providers should also be able to offer both diverse and flexible mixes of products (e.g., gaming platforms and game titles) and service offerings (e.g., payment mode options and subscription packages).
