Summary
This IDC study looks at the worldwide and U.S. markets for PC client sub form factors and forecasts them out to 2013. Nineteen sub form factors from the desktop and portable PC form factor categories are tracked, and their growth rates and shipment numbers are estimated. For the first time since the bubble burst in 2000, the PC industry in 2009 faces a decline in annual shipments. IDC attributes this negative growth to a slumping commercial market segment and a tightening in consumer PC purchasing (a result of a decline in discretionary spending due to the global economic crisis). As if the situation wasn't dire enough, the negative shipment growth rate could be just the short-term impact. Longer term, the fallout of the economic crisis in conjunction with the growing influence of industry factors driving down price, such as mininotebooks, there could be an even faster decrease in average selling prices for PCs than the declines typically associated with the industry. From the perspective of form factors, we expect steeper price declines to boost the rate at which portable PCs outship desktop PCs. With each forecast, we've moved the crossover point where notebooks outship desktops closer, and, with this document, we now predict that portable PCs will comfortably outship desktop PCs on a worldwide basis in 2009 by over 20 million units. For the forecast period out to 2013, IDC has reduced desktop shipments by nearly 10% per year as compared with our previous December 2008 forecast.
"The PC industry is going through one of the toughest periods in its history. IDC expects PC shipments to be down in 2009 as compared with 2008, reaching levels reminiscent of the period around the bubble bursting in 2000, when the PC market and the economy shrank. The downturn hasn't slowed the industry's major form factor trend the shift from desktops to notebooks in fact, it has accelerated it. The transition is happening faster and desktops are slipping further into a secondary market role. With the emphasis on mobility, OEMs are increasingly focusing their attention on smaller notebook market opportunities and enhancing their efforts on specialization (the effort of building toward a usage or purpose). They aren't ignoring desktops, but the major emphasis there is around proliferating more compact designs. The result from a sub form factor perspective is higher growth rates in nearly all of the 10 portable PC sub form factors we are tracking. The most notable is mininotebooks, whose shipment CAGR of 28.5% for 20082013 tops all the other sub form factors. Simultaneously, the five-year CAGR for all desktop sub form factors are down as compared with previous forecasts. That said, there are a couple of bright spots in desktops. Most significant are the all-in-one desktops and tiny desktop categories, and while we've forecast good growth for these segments, they could run even higher than our forecast if more major OEMs get behind them."
