"As competitive price pressures within open tape formats continued to 'thin' vendor margins, the market for single tape drives gave way to mounting pressure from competitively priced tape automation systems. Overall, customer revenue grew by a marginal 1% as compared with unit shipments recording a fall at 23%, respectively, compared with 1H07. With the economic recession expected to be at full swing in 2009, IDC believes that the tape automation market rather than the single tape drive market will benefit from the shift in demand as further consolidation is seen in the storage front. Therefore, the APEJ market for single tape drives is projected to decline in revenue (-3.1%) and unit shipments (-2.9%) over the next five years," says Mark Lee Kah Meng, market analyst, Storage Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.
