Summary
This IDC study presents IDC's network equipment and set-top box (STB) capex forecast for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the years 2005-2009. Key features included forecasts for eight APEJ markets ? Australia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Rest of APEJ or ROAPEJ (Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia). Fifteen carriers' activities in IPTV are analyzed ? BSNL, Reliance, China Netcom, China Telecom, Chungwha Telecom, KT, PCCW, HKBN, PLDT, SingTel, StarHub, Telekom Malaysia, MiTV, TRUE, and CS LoxInfo.
"The APEJ region has metropolitan areas that have achieved high household penetration of broadband Internet access and cable TV (CATV) access. These markets are ripe for broadcast TV over broadband services,"says Bill Rojas, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific."Over the next five years, the region will see large-scale IPTV deployments in most metropolitan areas with high broadband Internet access penetration. In those metropolitan areas where broadband access is lagging, carriers will look for innovative ways to utilize wireless broadband and satellite broadcasting with IP multicasting.
