Infrastructure Technologies in Western European Vertical Markets: An IDC Survey 2010

This IDC study draws on the results of IDC's latest European Vertical Markets Survey, 2010 which was carried out between May and August 2010 among 2,194 companies with more than 20 employees operating in the five largest Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.). The survey investigated IT spending directions, solution priorities, investment plans, and the adoption of a range of solutions and technologies across vertical markets, as well as the role of IT within the organization, IT budget dynamics, channel selection, and customer satisfaction with IT suppliers.

This study focuses on the survey's findings regarding familiarity, current deployment, and short-term adoption plans across vertical markets for four select infrastructure technologies: server virtualization, storage area network (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), and green datacenter.

Results are presented for total Western Europe, aggregated into the following nine vertical markets: financial services, discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, retail/wholesale, telecom/media, utilities/oil and gas, business services/transport, government/education, and healthcare.

Vendors should continue to address the vertical markets where the need for large, powerful, and efficient datacenters is stronger, said Serena Da Rold, program manager, IDC European Industry Solutions. Da Rold continues: But, they should also continue their evangelization efforts targeting small companies and sectors with traditionally more limited needs related to data storage and usage, which are undergoing a revolution in their use of information and communications systems and might not have realized yet that they need a more holistic approach to their IT infrastructure needs.
