Healthcare expenditure grew steadily over the last 15 to 20 years. Based on projections from the UN on world demographics, government deficits, and an expected shortage of professionals, IDC believes that this dynamic is not sustainable and will require operational and structural reform.

In this study IDC describes the main characteristics of the Western European healthcare sector. The main indicators include the number of organizations, the number of employees, and the annual expenditure. Data and related descriptions are provided for human health activities (NACE 85.1), with some detail for hospital activities. The study includes indicators of healthcare characteristics and activities for total Western Europe and for the five major countries, namely France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.
