Summary
This IDC study of the Canadian networking equipment market presents IDC's market sizing and spending forecast for LAN switches, routers, telephony, wireless LANs, and other data networking (i.e., optical, security appliances, and storage switches). It updates IDC's previous forecast published in Economic Crisis Response: Canadian Networking Equipment 2008-2012 Forecast Update (IDC #CA8IH8, December 2008). IDC analyzes the forces that stimulate or inhibit spending and those that shape the market. Broader market forces are also examined, from a macroeconomic and a technological perspective. Specific technologies included within the key forecast assumptions are IPv6, voice and video over IP, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM), and power over Ethernet (PoE) switch ports, hybrid Internet protocol public branch exchange (IP/PBX), and storage area networks.
"The Canadian network equipment market grew 2.9% in 2008, with Canadian companies collectively spending C$2.1 billion, and spending is forecast to grow to C$2.2 billion by 2013. Even with the economic downturn, network maintenance and upgrades are still important. The network is the supporting platform for all other IT technologies and the need for any new technology ultimately will drive network equipment growth," says Emily Taylor, research associate, Research Operations, IDC Canada.
