Summary
In this IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J9030103,) we explore the current and future dynamics of the Japan router market. The Japan router market in 2008 returned to positive growth on the back of next-generation network spending by carriers. However, the enterprise router segment was weak as the demand cycle had hit the trough and the economy was in the doldrums. Sluggish enterprise router demand is forecast. Enterprise router vendors will continue to find themselves in a tough market environment.
"Enterprise router vendors should promote the development of functions in the economic recovery period. When the economy recovers, enterprise IT spending will increase and companies will be more motivated to replace their enterprise networks. It follows that router demand will be boosted considerably. Efforts to develop technologies that realize stable mobile networks and look into more ways to leverage routers with high processing capabilities will lend a competitive edge to vendors when the economy starts to recover," says Kenichi Kusano, market analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
