Summary

This IDC study provides Western European WLAN equipment shipment and revenue data for 2008 and comparisons with 2007. Shipment and revenue shares are provided for network interface cards (NICs) and infrastructure by country and vendor for 2008. Shipment and revenue data for embedded solutions is not included in this study. Only IEEE 802.11 related products are covered in IDC's definition of WLAN. Included in the pivot table are the figures for the Western European market size and market shares of WLAN vendors active in the market.

A geographical split is included for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

"Due to the financial crisis, IDC expects a slowdown in hardware investments and project delays in Western Europe, which will also impact sales of WLAN equipment. We believe, however, that demand for mobility in the home and enterprise continues to be strong. WLAN solutions should be considered an integral part of the network architecture in order to move to a fully converged unified communication environment, and vendors need to carefully consider how they market their WLAN solutions to their customers in order to be successful in the future," said Evelien Wiggers, research manager, European Enterprise Networks, IDC.
