Summary
This IDC study provides the 2008 worldwide Fibre Channel (FC) infrastructure market forecast in response to the current economic crisis. It forecasts unit and port shipments as well as factory and market revenue for the sale of Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) and Fibre Channel switches. The study includes IDC's initial forecast for Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), which will become an important storage network technology by 2011. It also discusses how future trends in server form factors, server virtualization, and competing technologies such as FCoE will affect the competitive position of FC infrastructure vendors.
"The next two years promise to be a difficult time for the IT industry as a whole, and providers of FC infrastructure solutions will not be immune to these difficulties. For 2008-2010, reduced revenue from FC HBAs and switches will be attributable to the current economic crisis. After 2010, FC infrastructure revenue will be affected more by the start of broad FCoE deployments." - Richard Villars, vice president, Storage Systems
