Summary

This IDC study examines the use of desktop and network operating software in U.S. small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). It includes analysis both by company size and by vertical industry.

"There are currently more than 7 million SMBs in the United States with PCs and more than 3.5 million with LANs. The operating system decision is typically secondary to the PC or networking decision," says Merle Sandler, research manager in the SMB program at IDC "but there is a high level of uncertainly among both small and medium-sized firms regarding the brands of future operating systems, both for PCs and for networks, as well as a level of ignorance regarding operating systems that are actually still on the market. There is thus the opportunity for vendors to educate the market and gain market share."
