Summary

This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J9250101) analyzes the competitive climate of the vendors and shipment trends in the Japan blade server market until 1H08 (January to June). It also discusses the competitive edges of the leading vendors.

In this study, major differences were again uncovered in the Ability to Gain Shares of the top five vendors in the Japan blade server market. "In the Japan blade server market, the product strategies and retail partners' strategies are becoming increasingly important during the transition from phase 2 where large and medium corporations are switching their rack-mount optimized server and non-rack-optimized server to blade server, to phase 3 where the corporations are expanding market coverage to small and medium scale systems. When executing strategies for the small and medium scale system, first of all, vendors should clarify the segment they are focusing on for blade server. Is the target large/medium corporations' department systems or small and medium corporations? Depending on the targeted segment, the retail strategies and products strategies will also differ. Vendors should plan products that are appropriate for the target segment and strengthen education of own company or retail partners' system engineers blade server products on blade server products," observes Satoshi Fukutomi, research manager, Server, IDC Japan.
