Summary

This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report )examines the impact of the infiltration of multicore products on the Japan x86 server market. We also analyze the shipment trends of multicore servers by processor brand, socket capability, and form factor. Furthermore, we shall look at the impact of multicore products, which occupy a unit shipment share of more than 90%, on the future Japan x86 server and related markets. Together with these, we shall also forecast the unit shipment distribution by the number of CPU core per socket.

"IDC regards the period from 2008 as the post infiltration period for multicore technology in the Japan x86 server market. Among the keywords in this period are utilization, efficiency and improvement, and virtualization software infiltration. In the future, the unit shipment share occupied by servers with more CPU cores/sockets will expand in the Japan x86 server market. Accompanying this, the implementation rate of x86 server virtualization software, which aims to improve server utilization efficiency, will also increase. Vendors should develop their x86 server businesses with a focus on server consolidation using x86 server virtualization software," says Satoshi Fukutomi, research manager, Servers, IDC Japan.
