Summary
This IDC research reports estimates and forecasts for the adoption of server virtualization in Western Europe. The virtualization market is sized by number of virtualized servers shipped in the region, number of virtual machines, and server revenue associated with virtualization shipments.
"On the long wave of adoption in the x86 side of the server market, virtualization has become a crucial factor, changing the approach of suppliers and the deployment habits of customers throughout Europe. As proof of this, in 2008 - and for the first time ever - the number of virtual machine shipments surpassed that of physical servers in Western Europe. We maintain that the slowdown in physical server shipments will contribute to increase the gap over the next few years, and advise OEMs to plan accordingly in order to be well positioned when virtualization will start impacting refreshment rates," said Giorgio Nebuloni, research analyst with IDC European Systems and Infrastructure Solutions.
