Summary

This IDC study presents the enterprise applications spending results, specifically related to ERP and CRM, from IDC's 2009 European Software Survey segmented by country, industry, and company size. The document looks at changes in enterprise spending during 2009 as a result of the economic downturn in Europe and is based on information from a European online panel of 515 IT decision makers.

ERP spending will be strongly affected in 2009, as 21% of the 515 respondents said their ERP applications spending would be much lower or slightly lower in 2009 compared with 2008. Calculated as an average, the respondents say they will spend less on ERP during 2009 than in 2008. Other software areas, including CRM, did not on average see a spending decline during 2009. "This confirms IDC's earlier assumptions that infrastructure software areas will be most resilient to the current economic downturn and that applications such as ERP will be more negatively impacted. However, CRM will, according to the 515 respondents, fare much better than ERP in 2009," said Bo Lykkegaard, research director, European Enterprise Applications and Services, IDC.
