Highlights
UK footwear could see the biggest shakeup since the death of the British Shoe Corporation in the mid 1990s. A large part of the sector faces the risk of collapse, leaving only a few large scale specialists and more premium and fashion-led players surviving. However, this situation leaves considerable consumer expenditure for others to capture.
Many footwear retailers are weak because of low or non-existent profitability. Out of 10 major footwear retail chains, four are loss-making, while none makes an operating margin of over 10.0%. In the past year, several have collapsed and more look likely to suffer in early 2009.
In 2008 growth in the £5.6bn sector was half that of 2007 and is likely to worsen in 2009. The middle and lower end of the market have seen the worst conditions, as the disposable incomes of consumers with families to support have shrunk, while the premium and young fashion sectors have continued to expand.
