Summary
Over the next five years, the clothing and footwear markets will be characterised by a lower level of deflation. Clothing has been one of the retail markets hardest hit by downward price pressure. The progression of the value clothing operator has driven a new expectation of price in the market, forcing traditional middle market retailers to realign their pricing.
Scope
- Market value and growth, inflation 1995-2004 with annual forecasts to 2010 for the clothing & footwear market and individual categories separately.
- Analysis of key issues that will shape market demand over the forecast period
- Channels of distribution analysis for 2004,2005 and 2010 - detailing clothing & footwear sales for key retail types and spending by category
Highlights
Value clothing operators will once more be at the fore of growth in the market. Having fine-tuned their retail propositions and offers over recent years, the emphasis will be on space growth and moving into more prime locations over the coming years.Space expansion will play a major role in sales growth. Approximately 34.6m sq ft of total retail space is due to come on board through either new developments or space refurbishment between now and 2010.Against the backdrop of lower total growth, like-for-like sales growth among specialist operators will decline because of excess capacity in the market. We estimate it will average 1.8% per annum over the five years to 2010.
