Cosmeceuticals US industry forecasts for 2015 & 2020 Market Research Report
The Freedonia Group Incorporated is a leading international industry study/database company. Founded in 1985, Freedonia publishes more than 125 studies each year, covering such areas as building materials, chemicals, health care, packaging, pharmaceuticals, plastics, security and many other industries. Studies cover entire industry sectors as well as key niche markets. Each study includes such valuable intelligence as growth markets and products, market share, product analyses and forecasts, market analyses and forecasts, and company profiles. Studies specific to the US also place the industry into its international context.
This study analyzes the US market for cosmeceutical products and chemicals. The term ""cosmeceuticals"" does not have a universally accepted definition, nor is it recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For the purposes of this study, the term will refer to products or ingredients of products that provide direct appearance-enhancing benefits (e.g., anti-aging). Cosmetics that mask visible signs of aging or other superficial defects without exerting any corrective action on the site of application are not considered to be cosmeceuticals. By contrast, the classification includes pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical ingredients indicated for the treatment or prevention of dermatological and related external disorders (e.g., male pattern baldness) that detract from overall appearance. Nonpharmaceutical products and chemicals that alleviate or slow the onset of age-associated conditions such as wrinkles and graying hair are also categorized as cosmeceuticals.
Historical data for 2000, 2005 and 2010 and forecasts for 2015 and 2020 are provided in dollars unless otherwise indicated. The term ""demand"" refers to US demand, sales or apparent consumption (including both merchant and captive consumption) and denotes US production plus imports less exports. Demand is presented at the manufacturers' level (and thus excludes intermediate markups at the wholesale and retail levels). Tabular details may not add to totals due to independent rounding, and ratios may be rounded for the sake of clarity.
Information and sources of data about the cosmetic and toiletry industry, as well as cosmeceutical products and chemicals, were obtained from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including government and trade associations, industry participants, online databases and other Freedonia studies. Primary information was gathered through consultations with personnel of participating companies, as well as from various trade associations, such as American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) and American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Secondary and background data were obtained from various government and trade publications including Chemical & Engineering News, Chemical Week, Cosmetics International, Cosmetic Surgery Times, Global Cosmetic Industry, Household and Personal Products Industry (HAPPI), ICIS Chemical Business (Americas) and JAMA. Corporate annual reports, SEC Form 10-K filings, product literature and other company information were also used in framing the industry and market environments and as input for market size assessments. Macroeconomic and demographic indicators used in this study were obtained from The Freedonia Group Incorporated Consensus Forecasts dated April 2011. Related Freedonia studies include #2712 Cosmetic Surgery Products (December 2010), #2670 Enzymes (September 2010) and #2369 Cosmetic & Toiletry Chemicals (July 2008).
