Market Analysis
Brazil is one of the world's largest retail markets. The sales in the industry have been growing strongly since 2003 and are expected to continue at this momentum only over the next few years as constantly declining inflation rate allows for continued expansion of real incomes (increasing demand for non-durable consumer goods) and credit conditions ease (sustaining demand for durable goods).
A process of consolidation of the retail industry has been underway but overall, the market remains relatively fragmented, indicating substantial scope for the larger players to grow their market share in future. The top five supermarket chains account for approximately 40% of total sales. Three players - Brazil's Po de Acar, France's Carrefour and US's Wal-Mart -currently dominate the market, with the rest accounted for by much smaller - typically local - chains, each of which accounts for little more than 1% of the national market. Many of these are likely to be absorbed into the market leaders, as they seek to fortify their market presence through acquisitions.
All the market values have been converted to US$ at May 2007 exchange rate where,
1 Brazil Real (BRL) = US$ 0.494 (Approx).
Key Findings of the Report
- Retail food sales still dominate the total retail market accounting for more than 50% of the total retail sales.
- Rising purchasing power due to stable macroeconomic factors and the strengthening middle class base will fuel the growth of Brazilian retail industry.
