Summary

Regional Overview: The 'Greening Of MGR In Western Europe In May 2007, the UKs second-largest mass grocery retailer (MGR), Asda, announced that it had begun testing biodegradable milk bottles using recycled cardboard lined with biodegradable plastic. The move has been welcomed as a significant step towards reducing the 3mn tons of plastic thrown away in the UK annually. The UK continues to be one of Western Europes worst culprits for relying on landfill as a means of waste disposal. Furthermore, plastic bags, bottles, trays and cartons distributed by grocery retailers such as Asda continue to be among the least recycled items of all packaging waste. Asdas initiative should therefore be welcomed for its potential to change the UKs poor recycling track record. However, the move can also be seen as the latest in a string of announcements by Western European MGRs which highlight the extent to which a visible commitment to environmental preservation has become a key strategy for grocery retailers striving to win and retain customers.
