The global multiline retail industry consists of the total revenues generated through the sale of retail goods via department store and general merchandise stores, valued at retail selling price with any currency conversions calculated using constant 2008 annual average exchange rates.
The department store sector comprises sales via a large scale retail outlets, often on many floors, offering a number of different product categories, of which more than 20% of sales should be in each of at least two separate departments (such as clothing and homewares) but less than 70% in any one sector. This segment excludes discount department stores and similar outlets. The general merchandise store sector includes all other multi-line retail outlets, including discount department stores and warehouse clubs.
