Summary
Introduction
Following challenging market conditions in 2005, this year furniture & floorcoverings has performed significantly better. Despite a steep sales decline by MFI, the market is set to deliver stronger growth in 2006, fuelled by an improved economic picture, a flood of new cheap space to the market and ambitious expansion strategies from ScS and Land of Leather.
Scope
- Comprehensive market coverage - ten years' data on furniture & floorcoverings expenditure.
- Market shares and key operating statistics of leading specialist and non-specialist operators.
- Retailer profiles include sales, operating profit and margins, sales per sq ft, store and space growth plus retail operations and company outlook.
Highlights
After the challenging market conditions presented in 2005, the furniture sector as a whole has picked up in 2006. We expect growth of 2.4%, pushing the total market value to over 12.9bn. Though this represents a clear improvement on the 1.0% growth achieved in 2005, furniture remains among the slowest performing retail sectors in the UK.
In 2006 MFI looks certain to be knocked off its perch as the number one UK furniture retailer having held the position for more than 20 years. After several years of difficult trading, catalogue retailer Argos is set to supplant MFI to take the crown. Furthermore, we expect that MFI will also fall behind DFS and IKEA.
The smaller floorcoverings sector is on track for an improved performance in 2006. After a decline in the market of 4.5% in 2005, growth of 0.9% though modest is nonetheless good news. The brighter economic outlook, and the increased number of property transactions are the main reasons for this improved performance.
Reasons to Purchase
- Quantify opportunities in the furniture and floorcoverings market and enhance your understanding of the key issues, trends and dynamics in the market.
- Benchmark performance measures and use best practice examples and action points to devise a competitive strategy in this changing market.
- Be aware of the challenges that face all operators in the market as well those of different retail formats to ensure productive, growth plans.
