Summary

This Key Note Market Report on giftware covers: toys and games; jewellery and watches; ceramics; glassware; and small leather goods, such as purses and wallets. Most sectors of the giftware industry were badly affected by the last recession in the early 1990s as unemployment, job insecurity and high interest rates curtailed expenditure on what could be regarded as unnecessary luxuries. While the current recession has, again, curbed consumer expenditure, the interest rate is just 0.5% and VAT has been temporarily reduced in efforts to kick-start spending. However, the British Retail Consortium found that UK retail sales fell in May 2009 despite the previous month's revival. Overall sales fell by 0.8% over last year with non-food sales down 2.4% over the 3 months ending 31st May 2009, reflecting an 'extremely difficult spring' for most non-food retailers.

The latest Insight Report from Experian, published in late May 2009, suggests that the current recession has caused a huge section of the UK population to radically rethink how, when and with whom they spend their money, with nearly two-thirds of consumers saying they are less brand-loyal than before.

Joe Statton, Planning Director at The Future Foundation, an Experian company, commented on the report's findings: 'In the post-recession UK we are going to see the rise of the promiscuous, bounce-back consumer - one whose loyalty has to be won and re-won every day. The biggest casualty will be brand monogamy as consumers demand higher levels of service than ever before, and drop those brands we do not believe fully appreciate - and indeed reward - their custom'. This is likely to be particularly true of giftware; expenditure on which is discretionary.

Recent corporate activity of relevance across the giftware industry has included the iconic Waterford Wedgwood brand's acquisition by a US private equity company in February 2009. The company's products had been falling from favour as formal dining became a thing of the past and its offering was too expensive in the current climate. The company was put into administrative receivership in January 2009, having been unable to secure a stay of execution from its creditors. Toy manufacturers such as Mattel and The Character Group, meanwhile, have been hit hard by bad debts and excess stock following retailer the Woolworths' fall into administration in November 2008.

With the markets of Western Europe and North America depressed, manufacturers and retailers alike are increasingly looking to other overseas markets to grow sales. South America (particularly Brazil), Russia, the Middle East and Asia (particularly the People's Republic of China [PRC] and Korea), have been identified as having the potential in which to expand. However, there are tentative signs of an improvement in the UK - those controversial 'green shoots.' The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said in May 2009 that the worst of the recession may now be over and that Great Britain is among a handful of countries that may be seeing a pause in its economic slowdown. Given the economic situation, Key Note predicts modest growth in the value of retail sales of giftware with some product categories, namely ceramics and glassware, actually falling in value in the short term.
