Summary
US demand to grow 6.7% annually through 2011
Total pet health spending (products and services) is projected to increase 6.7% per year to nearly $30 billion in 2011. At the manufacturer level, demand for pet health products in the US is forecast to advance 5.4 percent per year to $4.9 billion in 2011. Spending on pet health products and services has doubled over the past decade, driven by the 60% of US households that own pets and by advances in veterinary technology. Increased health care spending in turn has resulted in pets living longer. Pet ownership is expected to remain high, and spending on the health of those pets is forecast to remain favorable.
Shift toward preventative care to boost vitamins, drugs In the past, the focus of pet health has been on the diagnosis and treatment of existing health problems. However, as pet owners view their pets as more "human" or "child-like" there is a growing interest in undertaking preventative measures to ensure long-term health. These attitudes are driving demand for vitamin and mineral supplements and certain parasiticides, improved diagnostic chemicals, as well as more standardized check-up schedules. And, if a pet does become ill, there will be a wider array of pharmaceuticals available than in the past.
More pet health conditions caused by longevity, obesity
Greater spending on preventative health care will allow pets to live longer. Similar to humans, with age, pets can develop a wide range of medical conditions, such as arthritis, heart disease, renal failure and cancer. In addition, there are many pet owners who overfeed their pets, and as a result, roughly one-quarter of pets are overweight. This is leading to an increase in weight-related illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes. As a result, demand for products designed to treat weightrelated conditions will experience favorable growth through 2011. In order to help defray health costs, more owners will invest in pet insurance, which is forecast to grow at double-digit rates Dogs to remain top market While cats accounted for 45 percent of all pets in 2006, more dollars are spent on dog health care. In fact, dog health care products accounted for 65 percent of total pet health care product demand. This difference is partially due to the fact dogs are more likely to be outdoors for extended periods of time, and their potential exposure to pests, bacteria and viruses then becomes higher than an indoor only cat. In addition, dogs tend to be more prone than cats to some medical conditions, such as heart disease. As a result, health care products for dogs will remain the largest segment of pet health products demand.
