Together, North America, Japan and Europe account for $9 out of every $10 spent worldwide in department stores. After a period of subdued growth this core market is expected to produce stronger growth over the next five years.

Though China is one of the smallest markets it records the most explosive growth up 132.4% since 2001 to $4.1bn. Markets in Latin America (up 83.9%) and the rest of Australasia (up 34.2%) have also seen rapid growth.
