Summary

As a group, the 'BRIC' countries, Brazil, Russia, India, and China, represent the future of the global economy. These four countries account for over 40% of the world's population (with a combined 2.8bn people in 2007) and a growing share of the world's wealth. According to our projections, their combined gross domestic product is set to triple by 2012, in nominal US dollar terms, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 8%. This is far higher than our forecast for annual average growth in the developed economies-Japan, the US and the eurozone-of just 2.5%. These dynamics will put the BRIC countries, and the rising purchasing power of their inhabitants, at the forefront of global investment

The BRICs are not created equal, however. Russia and Brazil are net commodity exporters, whereas India and China are among the world's largest importers of commodities, and are set to continue increasing their share. China is running a massive current account surplus, and is forecast to maintain it at least until 2012; conversely, India is running a sizeable deficit, and we project Brazil and Russia to join it by 2010. Demographics are also an issue, as each faces unique challenges relating to the age of their workforces (China is getting old, India is young) and the prospects of a shrinking population (Russia). These differences necessitate a nuanced and well-informed analytical approach.
