Summary

Review

Relations remain tense between the premier, Ralph O'Neal, and the UK-appointed governor, David Peary. The government has responded to concerns over rising crime by announcing plans to recruit seven police officers from the UK on two-year contracts. Legislators passed a US$285m fiscal budget at the end of April for 2008/09 (April-March). The government estimates that real GDP expanded by 9.5% in 2007. It anticipates that growth will slow to 5.7% in 2008, mainly as a result of slower activity in the tourism sector.
