Summary

Review

The global economic crisis has led to renewed international calls for improved regulation and transparency in financial sectors, both onshore and offshore. The government continues to pledge assistance in the fight against crime, but progress is slow. The fiscal accounts will remain under intense pressure in 2009 as tourism earnings weaken and the offshore financial sector faces reduced profitability. As a result of slowing US and UK demand, the performance of the tourism sector is set to deteriorate in 2009. In late November 2008 Digicel became the third mobile operator to enter the BVI market after announcing an investment of US$17m.
