Summary

In 2004, as German Government subsidized on solar industry, the subsequent huge demand brought about high profits of global polysilicon manufacturers. In addtion, great success of US First Solar brought a new era of thin film solar cell in 2007. Low cost--1.3$/W; high efficiency--almost 11%, meanwhile, a large number of orders from EU and North America regions and abundant raw materials in large-scale production, and those factors all promoted First Solar to achieve revenue expectations with high profits, revenue and reliability, which also meant the world had entered into the golden time for thin film solar. In 2007 and 2008, thin film has been the most popular field in the solar industry. A lot of new projects have emerged or been put into production, and equipment vendors own too many orders that some have peen arranged in the next year or longer, still there are many new orders. Besides US First Solar, Japan Sharp also started their plan of mass production in thin film field, German Q-CELL Schott Solar also made a big investment on thin film solar cell, Taiwan invested more than 10 thin film projects at a short period, the amorphous silicon manufacturing leader in the home market-- China Suntech has put their new energy into commercial production successfully, and Hebei Xinao Group invested about 14billion RMB on thin film business, which all show that thin film has gained more and more attention. Low cost and generation advantage of thin film will be the major driving force of reducing solar power cost, although C-Si PV will still be the key product for a long time, in the long run, thin film is comparable to the traditional energy hero.

Some key findings from this report:

  • Manufacturing process and related technology information of thin film (Cd Te CIS/CIGS a-Si (Single Tandam or triple junction) amorphous/microcrystalline [a-Si/c-Si] double junction) in Global and China
  • Manufacturing capacity, production and expansions of thin film solar cell in Global and China from 2005 to 2013
